Store offers healthy foods

SINCE June this year, Upper Gully Organics has grown from strength to strength under the new direction and ownership of Mick Kir.
With the support of long-time shop manager, Jenni Duncan, Upper Gully Organics has expanded its retail range to cover organic fresh produce, garden care, laundry detergents, cosmetics, baby foods, supplements, fresh breads, hot pies and tasty treats.
After patronising the store for more than seven years, Mick decided to buy the business.
“I wanted to feed my own kids, and the community, food that was grown both locally and chemical-free,” he said.
“If I had a choice to buy broccoli from Queensland or the Mornington Peninsula, it’s no contest.
“It’s all about ‘food miles’ and buying locally is always my priority.”
Noticeably, much of the stock at Upper Gully Organics is produced in Victoria and ranges from laundry detergents from Riddells Creek to vitamin supplements from Bentleigh.
As a previous owner of a book store, Mick has introduced a selection of cookbooks for all types of dietary requirements.
“There are books with some great recipes catering for many allergies and needs such as vegetarian and vegan as well as gluten-free, and even a book that offers a natural response to ADHD as distinct from a chemical ‘cure’,” he said.
“From tofu cheese to wheat free pasta, our store has a consumer conscience.”
For those looking forward to an old-fashioned turkey on the Christmas table this year, perhaps a free-range bird will help digest all the extravagance.
Set up with tables for a healthy snack with organic coffee or tea, Upper Gully Organics is open seven days.
Hours are Monday to Friday 9am -6pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm. For orders or inquiries, phone Mick or Jenni on 9752 2688. Upper Gully Organics is at 1232 Burwood Highway, Upper Ferntree Gully.
