THE Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, renowned throughout Australia and overseas, offers classes that focus on developing students’ confidence, self-esteem, communication and social skills through a balanced drama and theatre arts program.
Karen Booth, principal of the Melbourne Outer Eastern Suburbs academy, manages nearly 300 students and said it is not a talent school.
In our academy every child is a star,” she said.
“If you have a shy or boisterous child, lessons in drama can help them to become well-rounded individuals with a healthy outlook on life.
“In today’s fast paced and competitive society, it is all the more important for students to be confident and articulate. Being so, gives young people the greatest chance for success in following their dreams and reaching their full potential.”
The academy has a mix of students, with around one third being boys.
“I find that many of the boys become very passionate about drama and discover it is really their “thing”,” said Karen.
“Students need never have done drama before. There is no auditioning or pressure to perform.”
Classes are age grouped and are full of exciting and varied activities each week including dynamic speech work, creative movement and dance dramas, improvisations, mini-scripts, snappy snippets, theatre sports and games.
All teachers with the academy are fully qualified primary or secondary trained as well as undergoing regular training in the Helen O’Grady Drama System.
