Billy hold-up highlight

highlight of the annual Winterfest celebration – a staged hold-up of Puffing Billy.

A STAGED hold-up of Puffing Billy is set to draw huge crowds to the 13th annual Emerald Winterfest this Sunday.
Emerald bushranger Mad Macca and his gang will stage a robbery that will see the legendary locomotive hijacked.
With his loot of chocolate coins to throw into the crowd, Mad Macca and his gang will make friends with the locals before being chased away by police.
Visitors and local residents will have two chances to watch the exciting performance of the train robbery on Sunday, 30 July at 11.15am and 1.15pm.
Winterfest organiser Don Hodge said the festival is now recognised as the largest community event in the Dandenong Ranges.
Mr Hodge said this year there would be more than 120 stalls showcasing arts, crafts and local businesses.
He said the Winterfest committee would like to acknowledge the help and support of several businesses including Barry Plant Real Estate, Emerald Mitre 10, Ferntree Gully Nissan and the Shire of Cardinia.
Mr Hodge said the committee would also like to thank all the people behind the scenes who help make Emerald Winterfest such a success.
One of the many highlights of the day will be the simulated car bust-up and emergency service rescue at 2pm in Kilvington Drive.
The rescue was held for the first time last year and proved to be very popular with the crowd.
Featuring a crew of made-up actors, the bust-up showcases the rescue skills of the State Emergency Service (SES), Country Fire Authority (CFA), Victoria Police and ambulance.
Local residents and visitors can also bring along their beloved pets for the inaugural pet parade with 10 categories and prizes available.
A number of displays will also be available from steam engines to the Victorian Military Corps display.
Meanwhile, Tecoma up and coming singer Jasmine Shepard will take centre stage at the festival after winning an idol competition.
Ms Shepard, who says she wants to pursue a singing career after finishing school, was one of nine finalists who went head to head on Sunday, 18 June, for the chance to play at the Winterfest.
Local schools and bands including Ruckus, Jetty Road, and Leanne Patrick and her band will also entertain visitors.
There will be something for everyone with face painting and free show bags available for children.
So visitors and locals should check out the many wonderful events and activities on display at the Emerald Winterfest on Sunday.
