Saluting their service

HILLS servicemen and women have been recognised for their contribution to helping to defend Australia.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood last week presented 17 defence medals to past and present service personnel from Gembrook, Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Upwey and Berwick.
The Australian Defence Medal was established last year as a way to recognise members of the defence force.
It recognises the service of current and former defence force members who have made a contribution to the country’s national security since the end of World War II.
Richard Maretti, 43, of Ferntree Gully, who was one of the medal recipients, said it was great to be recognised by the government.
Mr Maretti joined the Army Reserves in 1980 as a telecommunication specialist.
“I joined the reserves because I wanted to learn some new skills and I really enjoyed my time serving my country,” he said.
Mr Maretti said the highlight of his short Army career was undertaking a night parachuting course.
“We got to parachute down to Sydney Harbour as part of Australia Day celebrations which was just great,” he said.
