Call for fast-track camera

AN EMERALD woman has called for police to put a speed camera along Emerald-Monbulk Road in a bid to stop excessive speeding.
Nardia, who requested that her surname would not be used, said she was concerned that if something was not done soon, there would be a serious accident.
She said a stretch of Emerald-Monbulk Road between Butterfield and Stewart Roads was becoming an increasing concern.
Nardia said she initially spoke to Emerald Police but was told that Monbulk police looked after that section of the Emerald-Monbulk Road.
Yarra Ranges Traffic Management Unit officer Sergeant John Morgan said writing a letter was the first step towards getting the police to investigate traffic on a road.
He said after receiving a letter from concerned residents, the police then examine the crash statistics of that particular area.
“It is not just a matter of speed, we need to identify if the area has a high collision rate,” he said.
“If 85 per cent of vehicles are found to be exceeding the speed, a report would then be put together with the crash statistics to identify the need for a speed camera,” he said.
Nardia has estimated that the majority of motorists speeding along the stretch of road are doing 90-100 kilometre per hour in a 60 km/h speed zone.
Nardia also said she was concerned there was no footpaths along the road and locals walking their dog or going for a run are risking being hit by speeding motorists.
