Mango’s medal

By Dennis Fuller
BIG Huey pulled the plug on Saturday so Emerald golfers had quite a few litres of moisture to contend with.
Stephen ‘Mango’ Maguire back from competing in the Australian Amateur Championship at Hobart showed all a clean pair of heels to chase his five handicap home for a nett 66. This score gave him the Monthly Medal and A Grade sash as well.
Steve Miller fresh back from painting the town red, and various shades of puce, won B Grade on a count back from Keith Bailey when, with the aid of his 20 handicap scored a nett 67.
Meanwhile, Graeme Lawler, fresh back from school holidays managed a nett 69 from his 23 handicap to win the C Grade gong.
Other to present good cards were, Ross Martin and Leigh Morison with 68 and Andrew Tudor played to his handicap with 70.
Nearest the pins was won by Keith Bailey on the seventh, Edin Selimovic the 12th, Kenneth Hill the 13th while Selimovic filled his piggy bank by winning the pro pin on the 18th.
Ian Scott and Barry Cook, proved beyond all doubts that working on the course is not necessarily an assurance of good scoring. They managed 90 and 81 respectively.
Cook, was however concerned by a lacerated thumb while Scott was concerned about political happenings in France and Upper Botswana.
Next week we face a South African four-ball event where the pairs multiply their individual scores on each hole to calculate their team score.
Woe betide any partner who scores nothing while the other birdies a hole.
