Trap set to clean up creek water

MONBULK Creek’s water quality is expected to improve following the installation of a sediment trap to reduce the flow of organic matter into the creek.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges recently constructed the two-metre deep sediment trap, which is connected to the shire’s storm water network, near Nation Road in Selby.
The work was funded by Melbourne Water.
Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn said the Friends of Monbulk Creek suggested the trap to protect the creek and aquatic life.
“Sediment enters the waterway leading to higher turbidity levels and a decline in water quality, which also has an impact on micro organisms and aquatic life living in the water,” she said.
Cr Dunn said the council was delighted to support the work.
The shire has installed a further six sediment traps in environmentally sensitive areas to improve the quality of water entering creeks and waterways.
