MONBULK’S U17 cricketers are in a strong position against The Basin after the first day of round 5.
An 83-run opening partnership between Justin Creed (60) and Brendan Wilson (38) laid a solid foundation, before Sam Goland (31) and Kieren Gray (30) helped the side reach 5 for 193 from the 50 overs.
The U15s also batted and were 6 for 49 when Stephen Torsello (10) and Michael Wolfe (8 not out) came together to defy Ferntree Gully for 25 overs: a great effort of defensive and disciplined batting. With a total of 8/78 the boys will have to bowl exceptionally well to have a chance of victory.
Both U13 teams, meanwhile, were on the field. The U13/2s faced a powerful Eildon Park and despite some good line and length from Brodie Curry, Bryce Lees and James Hutchins, the home side amassed 342.
The U13/1s were in trouble early with Upper Ferntree Gully at 0/80 but better bowling and some good catching saw the visitors crumble to 9 for 161. Liam Mackin and Daniel Carr both took two wickets.
In the non-competitive U11s, it was a win for Monbulk, their first of the season. Well done to Ewen Doonan who made 20 and took 3 wickets. Monbulk 8 for 84 defeated Upwey 10/73.
