War on graffiti guerillas

MELBA Support Services in Mt Evelyn has joined together with the Shire of Yarra Ranges in a war against graffiti.
The group has been working hard to remove graffiti from walls, shop fronts and signage in Wray Crescent on a weekly basis.
Melba Support Service, which provide opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to connect and contribute to their community, initiated the program in May.
Billanook Ward council Tim Heenan said the group has been doing some tremendous work and it was wonderful to see people working together to enhance and beautify the township.
Support services manager Ellen Clacy said the program had enabled the group to contribute to their local community.
“The program was really initiated by one of our participants, James Ingram.
“He would always comment on the amount of graffiti in the township, particularly after the weekend, and was very keen to help remove it,” she said.
Cr Heenan said Mr Ingram and the group are to be congratulated.
“The results are fantastic. It’s the contribution of groups like this that make an enormous difference to our community,” Cr Heenan said.
Graffiti removal kits, which include everything needed to remove graffiti as well as discount paint vouchers, are available at any of the shire’s five community links in Monbulk, Upwey, Lilydale, Yarra Junction and Healesville.
For more information contact the shire on 1300 368 333.
