Paintings of change

By Tania Martin
A BIG red bollard and the sea present an award winning picture.
Sue Jarvis from Gembrook is thrilled that her painting of the Melbourne Docklands is a finalist in the Fleurieu Peninsula Water Prize.
The painting titled Departure was inspired by Sue’s fascination with the Docklands.
She said the painting is symbolic of someone leaving the safety of the docks and venturing into the wild unknown territory of the sea.
Sue always paints buildings and places that are going to change in the future.
“I paint things that are going to inevitably change,” she said.
“In Departure parts of the Docklands such as the old sheds are likely to be pulled down.”
If this happens, Sue said her painting will be a historic picture of the Docklands.
Sue said being a finalist in awards such as the Fleurieu Peninsula Prize is not about winning but about getting work noticed and for an artist to make a name for themselves. “It is something that you can put on your resume,” she said.
The winners will be announced at a gala awards dinner on Saturday, 11 November.
Nickey Downer, chairman of the 2006 Fleurieu Peninsula Biennial said the night will be one not to be missed.
Ms Downer said the awards dinner is always a glittering event and the audience waits anxiously for the winners to be announced.
“It’s really the Oscars of the landscape art world,” she said.
