Sports day leap forward for funds

MT EVELYN Primary School is one step closer to raising funds for much-needed sports equipment after the success of its first sports day last week.
Students proudly displayed their house colours as they battled it out for team pride in a range of athletic events including sprinting, shot put and discus.
Run in conjunction with Golden Circle’s School Fun run program, students from prep to grade six were sponsored by family, friends and community members in a bid to raise funds for school equipment.
Physical education teacher Matt Castles saw the day as a great way to encourage sporting pride after the success of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
“The day is aimed at getting students interested in house pride and athleticism,” he said.
Students were equally as impressed with the day.
“It’s cool,” said grade six student Nick, “all the kids are involved and it’s exciting competing against your school.”
Prep student Keely also enjoyed the day.
“It’s really fun. My favourite sport is running because I like to win,” she said.
Parents Association member Anna Griffith, who along with other parents organised food, goody bags and events for the day, was happy with the way the students got behind the day and their school.
“The day is a way of encouraging fitness and friendliness between the kids.” she said.
The school raised over $4000, with students receiving a range of prizes for their fantastic fundraising efforts.
