AFTER a number of attempts over several frustrating years, veteran player Tim Hubbard has finally achieved his goal of winning the Belgrave Tennis Club’s Mens Singles title.
Playing on Sunday against popular junior Steve Cornell, Hubbard lost the first set 3-6 but then settled into a steady power games to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2.
An ankle injury meant that the 2005 champion, Rico Schroder, was forced to watch from the sidelines.
With last year’s ladies champion Prisca Eser also absent from the courts after giving birth to her first child last week, and insufficient nominations from other players, the 2006 women’s title was not contested.
However, a very pleasing number of doubles entries saw some hard-fought matches which resulted in yet another victory for Tim Hubbard when he and Susan Kremer successfully defended the title they first won in 2005.
They defeated promising junior duo Joe Habenschuss and Jeremy Stapleton 8-3 in a knock-out final set.
Final win for Hubbard
