A MAJOR fire destroyed popular Bayswater venue Club Kilsyth last week.
Peak hour traffic was diverted on Wednesday, 9 November as firefighters battled to bring the blaze under control. The alert was raised by a 000 call at 7.45am.
First to arrive on the scene was Montrose Fire Brigade, followed closely by fire trucks and crews from The Basin and Bayswater.
Country Fire Authority (CFA) incident controller Robert Earney said he was relieved when told the building was clear of people.
“It is always great to hear there is no life risk when you are faced with a fire of this magnitude,” Mr Earney said.
A total of 15 fire units and 60 crew members from both the CFA and Metropolitan Fire Brigade worked on scene, supported by Victoria Police, the Metropolitan Ambulance Service and Red Cross. The fire was brought under control by 8.30am, though the operation continued for many hours to completely extinguish hotspots initially rendered unreachable by the instability of the structure.
An investigation was immediately instigated to determine the cause of the fire.
