Art raises mental awareness profile

By Shaun Inguanzo
YOUNG people from throughout the Yarra Ranges last week celebrated the shire’s mental illness services by launching several artistic pieces.
In a presentation made at the Belgrave Youth Services on Wednesday 12 October, young people involved with the Shire of Yarra Ranges’ Traction and Paying Attention to Self (PATS) programs unveiled a mosaic, calendar and Tshirt, created by themselves to celebrate the services’ success in dealing with mental illness.
Many of the young people shared their insights into mental illness with some being affected directly, and some with family members who suffer.
On hand to help launch the items, described as expressions, was Shire of Yarra Ranges mayor David Hodgett.
“I congratulate the young people on their outstanding work and their willingness to share their personal insights into mental health issues with others,” he said.
“The mosaic, calendar and Tshirt all provide a way that others can understand different perspectives of mental health.”
Cr Hodgett added that research showed one in five people were affected in some way by mental illness, making it all the more important to raise awareness.
Youth services program coordinator Katharina Verscharen said the services were important to the health and wellbeing of young people in the shire.
“The programs provide opportunities for young people to participate at a leadership level through peer leadership and support,” Ms Verscharen said.
“Traction and PATS also provide young people with a range of options that can enhance lifestyle, participation and connection with their communities.”
