Time to weed out those interlopers

THE time has come for hills people to join the ongoing fight against weeds with the launch of the Cardinia Shire Council’s weed management scheme.
People can now get a rebate of up to $500 for any money spent on herbicides needed to kill off weeds such as blackberry, sweet pittosporum, ragwort and thistles.
The rebate is part of the council’s 2007-08 weed management scheme, which is now in its 11th year and is expected to be popular with residents again this year.
The council has also urged people to seek advice on weed eradication and management.
Council weed and landcare officer, Marianne Sawyer said local residents’ weed management efforts were an important part of stopping the spread of environmental weeds into nearby parklands.
“We want to halt the invasion of environmental weeds, particularly introduced species such as blackberry, sweet pittosporum, ragwort and thistles, before they make any more inroads into towns nestled in our precious bushland,” she said.
Ms Sawyer has urged people to tackle weeds and apply for the rebate for herbicides.
