MONBULK couple Jack and Dorothy Sykes celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with friends and family last week.
The couple first met in 1944 when Jack was on leave from the Army.
Jack served in the Sixth Battalion in the Middle East and New Guinea.
The couple met one day when Jack picked his sister up from where she worked at a factory in Melbourne.
After a short courtship Jack and Dorothy married in a double wedding ceremony, sharing their special day with Jack’s sister and one of his Army mates.
The two couples were married on Saturday, 29 September 1945 at the Holy Trinity Church in Brighton Road, St Kilda.
Shortly after their marriage, Jack and Dorothy moved to Monbulk where they had two children, before moving to The Patch.
Jack and Dorothy had two more children while living in The Patch.
The couple moved back to Monbulk in 1990.
Dorothy has spent most of her married life looking after the family and raising her children while Jack is well known in the Monbulk community for his involvement in the Returned Services League.
Now that her children are grown, Dorothy spends her time as a member of the Monbulk Senior Citizens Club, enjoys pottering in the garden and reading.
The couple are the proud grandparents to nine grand children and one greatgrand grandson.
