Emerald slip at Thornton

THE Emerald Football Club ventured, via the Black Spur, to Thornton this week to play 2006 Grand Finalists, Thornton-Eildon.
Seniors
Thornton-Eildon 18-18-126 d Emerald 9-8-62.
CONDITIONS were very good at the start of the game and Emerald came out determined to give Thornton-Eildon a run for their money. The Emerald side started off quickly and posted a couple of goals before Thornton had a chance to score a behind. The game then seesawed and Emerald’s good teamwork saw them go into the first break 8 points up.
With much needed rain coming in the second quarter, conditions became very slippery and made playing tough.
A fast-running Thornton side capitalised on the conditions and ran out comfortable victors on the day.
Best: A. Hellriegel, B. Kennedy, J. Mills, S. Williams.
Goals: L. McCombe 3, N. Ferrari, S. Williams 2.
Reserves
Emerald 11-5 71 d Thornton-Eildon 10-8-68.
EMERALD took a long road trip to Thornton-Eildon for their first game. The numbers for the 2s are generally down on this game, so they called upon some of the young stallions from the thirds.
The first quarter was fairly even although Emerald came in at quarter time 9 points down.
Emerald came out in the second quarter all guns firing. They kicked 6 goals to 2 and came in at half time 17 points up. Going into the third quarter with a huge momentum, Emerald could not keep this going. They were scoreless this quarter.
The last quarter was a real ding-dong but Bruce Whitehead and Jess Mather put through some great goals to keep Emerald in it and got over the line by a slim margin.
Best: M. Steer, C. Benoiton, S. Bergin, J. Mather.
Goals: J. Mather 5, D. Alenson, G. Sewell 2.
Under 18
Emerald 23-15 153 d Thornton-Eildon 4-2-26.
EMERALD started out very slowly playing from behind, letting Thornton kick the first two goals.
The next three quarters, saw Emerald dominate.
Every player contributed eventually running out 126-point winners. All new players made their presence felt in the team.
