Hardware coop’s

THE EMERALD Coop Mitre 10 has been serving the community for 60 years and was established in 1945 by five local farmers who recognised the need for a produce/hardware store in the area.
In 1983, the cooperative joined the Mitre 10 group which has helped the business grow into what it is today.
General manager James McConnachie has been working in the business since 1981 and has seen the turnover increase significantly along with many structural changes to the buildings.
The coop is one of the biggest employers in the area employing a mix of experienced staff with a significant number of local youth.
The coop’s shop manager Gregg Smith is a local identity and president of the Winterfest group. He is enthusiastic and dedicated to the customer, the Coop and the community.
As an agency for Bendigo Bank, the coop has built up a very successful banking business over the past five years with a significant increase in customers.
The coop is the local Elgas LPG supplier delivering to many households and is also an agent for BOC gas supplies.
A large range of timber is stocked and trade sales have increased dramatically in recent times.
“If it were not for the support of the shareholders and the community the coop would not be as strong as it is today,” said James.
“The coop also benefits the community as it is a large supporter of schools, churches, Echo and numerous sporting clubs.”
Members of the public can become a member of the coop, which currently has in excess of 3000 members.
“Staff at Mitre 10 store do their best to give the customer “All the help you need”, so whether you are after hardware, stock feed, briquettes, timber, paint or just to get a key cut call in and see us,” said James.
The Coop has just released a book “The History of the Emerald and District Cooperative Society” which is available for $9.95 in the store.
