A GEMBROOK potato farmer says it’s fantastic news that shoppers will no longer have to question where their fruit and vegetables come from.
This comes as the Federal Government recently launched a new Australian grown logo for all supermarkets and food stores.
Gae Failla of Gembrook said it was wonderful news that farmers would finally get recognition for their products.
Ms Failla said shoppers would now know the difference between locally grown and imported food.
“We get so many imported foods that many people don’t know what they are eating,” she said.
Ms Failla said the launch of the food labelling would boost the local agricultural industry as long as people understand that the logo means that the food is Australian grown.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood said local farmers would benefit significantly from shoppers being able to quickly spot Australian grown products.
“Research conducted in a Victorian supermarket last year clearly shows that shoppers are keen to buy Australian made products,” he said.
“Go to any supermarket and you’ll find that shoppers are faced with more choices than ever before – and confusing food labels.”
But Mr Wood said by extended the successful Australian Made logo to Australian grown products, shoppers will now be able to easily identify locally produced packaged food.
He said exporters would also be able to use the logo in overseas markets to capitalise on Australia’s reputation for producing healthy, high quality products.
