Artists’ journey to Gully

WATER JOURNEY: WATER JOURNEY:

By SHAUN INGUANZO
A FLOCK of artists from around Australia have converged on Ferntree Gully to exhibit both their earliest and latest works.
A Journey in Art is the Ferntree Gully Art Society’s latest exhibition at The Hut, Ferntree Gully.
It is showcasing the works of 30 Australian artists, but with an unusual twist: of the two pieces each has supplied, one must be dated pre1980, and another must be recently painted.
Society spokeswoman Margaret Eady said the exhibition would run for three Sundays from 11 to 4pm, having begun last Sunday, 14 August and ending Sunday 28 August.
Ms Eady said the artwork on offer demonstrated a variety of mediums, as well as the natural change experienced by artists over a 20year period of painting.
Ferntree Gully artist and society member Kathleen Loxton said she was exhibiting two watercolour pieces for A Journey in Art.
The 69yearold watercolour specialist said she had painted since childhood, and could not put a figure on the vast number of pieces she had completed. Ms Loxton said she sometimes forced herself to paint, but other times the inspiration to do so just flowed.
“I once found an old pair of boots while in Boronia,” she said. “I took them home, painted a picture of them, and then I sold the painting.”
Ms Loxton will also hold a painting demonstration on Sunday, 21 August at 2pm at The Hut. The Hut is located at 157 Underwood Road Ferntree Gully, and entry into the exhibition is free.
