HAZAN Halit admits in the past he’s been a Wally with water.
But, not any more – by necessity he’s a changed man.
“I’ve been the biggest waster of water when it didn’t matter, but now I’m a real convert,” said Mr Halit, a retired Melbourne Water supervisor.
The son of an Albanian market gardener, he still loves to grow his own vegetables at home in Yarra Junction.
By using quality brass fittings on his hoses and spray guns and keeping a close eye out for leaks, Mr Halit can be sure not a drop of the precious liquid is being wasted.
Mr Halit sent his own ‘top 10’ list of useful water saving tips to the Mail to share with readers.

1. Replace washers in dripping taps.
2. Do not shower longer than needed.
3. Buy an electric shaver.
4. Do not wash your car when it’s only slightly dirty. Use three buckets of water, one with washing detergent and two to wash the detergent off.
5. Wait until your washing machine is full to capacity before using it.
6. Replace and, or tighten leaking garden hose joiners. Use good quality brass fittings as a preference.
7. Ensure taps are turned off after use.
8. If your water meter is still working when the taps are all turned off, you could have a leak between the house and the meter. Lush green patches of lawn are an indicator of this also.
9. Trap shower and bath water and use at the base of shrubs and fruit trees.
10. Wait until your dishwasher is full before using.
“These are common sense things but we’re creatures of habit and it’s time to break some of those habits,” he said.
