SARAH Thompson is helping to keep young people off the street and teach them valuable life skills.
The 17-year-old Monbulk College student has been working with young people as a Ranges Victoria leader.
Ranges Victoria is a statewide program that is run by volunteers and is similar to guides or scouts.
Ms Thompson said the program was a great way to meet new people while enjoying the great outdoors and learning new skills.
Her group meets every Friday during the school term from 7-9pm, at factory 3, Nester Road, Woori Yallock.
She said participants in the program learned how to tie knots and administer first aid, as well as basic safety and cooking skills.
“We also do arts and crafts and activities to work on team spirit,” she said.
Ms Thompson said the program also gave people the chance to enjoy the great outdoors.
Participants over the age of 16 could take part in a variety of exciting outdoor adventures such as canoeing, abseiling and hiking.
She said the program was a great way to get young people off the streets and the best part of working with young people was seeing the change in their attitude towards life.
“It’s very rewarding being a leader and seeing the change in people,” she said.
“We even get some positive feedback from parents about the change in their children.”
Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Robin Leffel on 5966 9272.
