Sherbrooke Rangers shine

Action from the U12Action from the U12

THE weekend saw a number of good results for Sherbrooke Rangers teams chasing championship trophies.
The Men’s Forest thrashed Knox 5-0 giving them a virtually unassailable lead in Division Two while in a local derby between two Division Six teams, the Hoods defeated the Friars 4-0 to put them well ahead at the top of the table.
The U13 Sharks demolished their main opposition Kings 5-1 with an outstanding performance from sharp shooter Bennie Woischuck, who scored all five goals.
The U11 Bears maintained their top position on Sunday with another win though goal difference may be a telling story in this league with several tough matches ahead.
The U15 Pythons beat rivals Clayton 3-2 and still leave open the chance of a runners-up medal though they will need to beat league leaders Bulleen later in the season.
The Men’s Arrows kept their slim hopes alive of a possible second place finish by beating Blackburn 3-1 for their fifth consecutive win.
The Ladies team travelled to Werribee to play under lights. Despite playing the conditions reasonably well in the first half and coming in with a 1-0 lead their second half performance was disappointing, conceding three goals.
The U14 Terriers scored a convincing 10-0 win over Yarra Valley.
In the U10s, the Juggernauts’ outstanding newcomers Emily and Oscar Hulbert starred in a valiant attempt to beat Healesville, eventually going down 2-3.
Emily’s third game resulted in her third best on ground performance and was ably supported with a goal by her younger brother.
The U11 Pumas played excellent team soccer against undefeated Knox in the early stages of the game on Saturday. Excellent crosses from Michael Parkes and Brodie Currie were very close to being opening goals but just failed to find the necessary finishing touches.
Paul Torsello and Matt Gibby played well in defence negating the strong pushes of the Knox midfield.
Justin Lowe in goal cleaned up any loose through balls giving the team a lot of confidence. However, Knox are renowned for their excellent finishing skills up front and when their right winger broke wide on the right despite being forced wide he managed to power the ball into the roof of the net to give Knox a 1-0 lead at half time.
The Pumas, however, felt they were playing better soccer and came out all guns blazing in the second half. Several great crosses went tantalisingly close before man of the match Theo Thomas scored from the far right to equalise and boost the Pumas.
Knox was under the pump and lucky to have a great header goal from Justin disallowed for off side.
Not to be denied Luke Sproules casually side footed a corner in on the back post to give the Pumas a well-deserved 2-1 lead.
There was still a sting in the Knox tail when a through ball brought goalkeeper Paul Torsello off his line to block what looked like a certain goal.
The save ensured the Pumas a well-deserved victory and the result was a further testament to the excellent improvement in the side since the start of the season.
