TWO hills musicians will return to their roots this week to share a unique and exciting sound.
Dannie McKenzie (guitar) and Paul Winter (saxophone) feature in theatrical outfit The Woohoo Revue.
Winter grew up in Ferntree Gully, while McKenzie spent his childhood in and around Mt Evelyn and Montrose.
The pair has previously played Belgrave’s Aztec Bar, Micawber Tavern, Scarab Bar and The Lazy River (now Ruby’s Lounge) with several local outfits, including The Counterfeit Gypsies and The Jed Rowe Band.
Former band mates still lend support at shows.
“Being such a tight community, most musos have played together,” McKenzie said.
“It’s a tight scene.”
McKenzie and Winter joined Rebecca Wade (violin), Richard Burns (trumpet), Josh Bridges (electric bass) and Ben Charnley (drums) to form The Woohoo Revue early last year.
The band’s debut album ‘Dear Animals’ has received airplay on radio stations across the country.
“It’s been a big year,” he said.
McKenzie described the band’s sound as European dance music.
“We do hope to get it to take us off the shores,” he said.
The band will share the stage with a fellow hills local, Belgrave’s Ben Kelley, this Friday.
“I’ve been watching this guy gig since I started playing guitar,” McKenzie said.
The band also has several coming festival appearances including the St Kilda Festival on 8 February, the Rainbow Serpent Festival and the Brunswick Music Festival.
The Woohoo Revue and Ben Kelly play Ruby’s Lounge in Belgrave on Friday 30 January from 9pm.
Tickets are $10 at the door.
