Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club presented 380 junior players with their season trophies on Saturday and Sunday 16-17 September, with the highlight the presentation of the Alex Webb Memorial Award to Under 13s player, Aden Horton from The Patch.
MRSC junior coaching co-ordinator, Ewa Wallis, said 12-year-old Aden was a dedicated and skilful player who always played with a smile and helped his team-mates and others on the field.
“Aden’s ability and attitude represent the Monbulk Rangers ethics of fair play and always looking out for the team, and that’s what the club hopes to see in all our players,” she said.
In senior VCFA competition, Monbulk Rangers Knights emerged victorious to take the President’s Shield, defeating Knox Power 2-1 in a thrilling finals game.
The Knights owned the game for the first 20 minutes, but Knox scored the first goal 25 minutes in to lead 1-0.
Shortly afterwards, Monbulk’s Josh Vogrinec equalised with a header to take the Knights into half-time 1-1.
Knox started strongly in the second half, hitting Monbulk’s goal crossbar several times and forcing keeper Mikey Hoben to repel another three attempts.
Ten minutes before full-time, Monbulk striker Rob de Wit was tackled by the Knox goalkeeper inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to send the goalie off and award a penalty to the Knights.
Josh Vogrinec sealed the penalty to give Monbulk a 2-1 lead; and despite both teams having chances in the final 10 minutes, the score remained a victory for Monbulk Rangers Knights.
