The Victorian state government has announced more than $73 million will be provided to aid with ongoing repairs and recovery following the June storms.

Storm damage to powerlines resulted in widespread power outages throughout the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley, which resulted in an electricity supply emergency being declared on 17 June.

The funding will support the department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Parks Victoria and Water authorities to continue the significant work already underway.

Monbulk MP James Merlino said the state government is ensuring communities are supported and kept safe.

“In particular we want Victorians to be able to get out and about again in some of most beautiful open spaces.” he said.

The funding includes $27.6 million to repair roads and access tracks needed for firefighting and $2.6 million for fallen tree removal.

Included in the works will be the re-opening of the Kokoda Memorial Walk – also known as the 1000 Steps.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said the June storms affected communities across the state.

“We are supporting the continued response that is protecting our environment and infrastructure.” she said.

$600,000 dollars has been flagged for threatened species assessments and protection and $328,215 is being provided for weed control on public land.

The $73 million in funding accompanies an earlier announced $25.7 million package to support recovery and rebuilding for people affected by the storms.
