PRESCHOOL staff, parents and Knox council officers have been congratulated for their role in keeping four struggling preschools operational next year.
Chandler Ward councillor Monique Davey said Cooinda Preschool in Boronia, The Basin Preschool and Alexander Magit and Windermere Reserve preschools in Ferntree Gully had been told months ago that they may not be able to operate in 2007.
But Cr Davey praised community efforts in driving up enrolments and allowing the schools to remain viable, though they have been identified as ‘preschools of concern’ by the council.
Of the 30 preschools supported by the council, only Koolyangarra in Bayswater will not be operational in 2007.
Dobson Ward councillor Karin Orpen said Knox had always placed a high value on early childhood education and followed this up with funding.
“In Knox all the administrative tasks are done for (the preschools) and this is something Knox council should be very proud of,” she said.
Cr Orpen also pointed to figures provided by Kindergarten Parents Victoria (KPV) which said average 2006 fees paid by families were $727 per annum, compared to the Knox figure of $462.40.
Preschools supported by the council follow a kindergarten cluster model of management, with more than 70 staff employed across the 29 centres.
Knox mayor David Cooper said the council would continue to support preschool committees and the community in identifying strategies to strengthen enrolment numbers.
For inquiries about preschool enrolments or services, residents are advised to contact the council on 92988307 or visit www.knox.vic.gov.au.
Official concern continues for preschool
