SIX months of snazzy marketing, some impressive recruiting and an opening game right in the middle of Australia’s basketball heartland has ensured the South Dragons will be a powerful commodity in the National Basketball League (NBL) this season.
The first evidence of the NBL’s newest franchise being an instant success has come via ticket sales for the Dragons’ first ever game, which will take place at Knox Converse Stadium on Wednesday, August 23, against the Cairns Taipans.
With Melbourne’s eastern region boasting more registered basketball players than New South Wales and Queensland put together, it was always going to be a smart move for the Dragons to become a part of the grassroots fraternity.
Knox Basketball’s CEO Laurie Joyce says the interest in the game has almost reached unprecedented levels, with more than 30 phone calls a day coming through the association’s office.
“The game will be a sell-out, which must be a very exciting start for the Dragons, but it just goes to show what clever marketing and a commitment to the grassroots level will do,” said Joyce.
While tickets to the August 23 game are still available, Joyce believes they will be at a premium in the final days leading up to the game and has urged all fans to make sure they pre-purchase tickets.
For more information on the game or to purchase tickets (adults $10 – children $5), call Knox on 9762 1298.
