A KALLISTA woman’s passion for the environment has been rewarded with a 2006 Best Friends Award.
Doris Bevan first got involved with environmental groups in the Dandenong Ranges when she joined the Friends of Sassafras Creek in 1990.
The only reason she joined the Friends of Sassafras Creek was because she wanted to do something to help the environment.
Ms Bevan was one of three people from across the state to be awarded the Victorian Environment Friends Network award for her outstanding contributions to the environment.
A friends network spokesman said Ms Bevan is a truly remarkable lady whose great love for the environment has made her an extraordinary volunteer.
Age and a heart by-pass don’t stop Doris from helping her local community with the environment by weeding, seed collections, setting up educational displays, improving walking tracks and helping with weed buster activities.
Although humbled by the award, Ms Bevan she was shocked when the announcement was made.
“Working with the friends group is something I wanted to do and I certainly didn’t expect to be rewarded,” she said.
Ms Bevan also helps out with other environmental groups including the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater and Sherbrooke Forest.
