THE Shire of Yarra Ranges last week approved its best value review for aged and disabled service while also welcoming a funding boost for home and personal care.
The Best Value (BV) review looks at services provided in the shire for frailer older people and those with a disability living in the municipality.
In conjunction with the BV review, the shire has received a $29,756 grant from the Department of Human Services for home care.
Mayor David Hodgett said the funding was good news for the shire’s community care clients and a great opportunity for the council.
“The funding will be used to increase the skill base of council staff and Ranges volunteers in order to operate from a capacity building perspective,” Cr Hodgett said.
Shire manager of community services Viki Perre said the shire currently has various activities and programs for aged and disability services that aim to support older people and disabled people to live in their homes as independently as possible.
Ms Perre said one of the main aspects highlighted in the review was to retain the current six main services which range from information and assessment services, home care and personal care, home maintenance, food services, and planned activity groups to community transport.
Ms Perre said the review also outlines the need for the council to develop a positive ageing strategy.
She said demographic trends show that improved health means older people are becoming a larger percentage of the population.
