THE future of Gembrook’s township rested in the hands of Cardinia Shire Council last night (Monday) as councillors were due to make a decision on a 28-lot subdivision.
A report presented to the council recommended the application for the land in Redwood Road, Gembrook, be refused after 75 objections were received.
Townspeople have been fighting against the proposed development since they first heard about it in May.
Shirley Smith told the Mail in May that she feared the development would turn Gembrook into another urban centre similar to Pakenham.
Ms Smith said the proposed subdivision would change the way of life in Gembrook turning it from a small rural town into a suburban centre.
Objectors say that Gembrook is one of the last rural townships left in the area and should be kept that way.
