INTERNATIONAL swimming coach Jeffery Calder has taken up the challenge as head coach of the Monbulk Aquatic Club.
Monbulk Aquatic Club has been struggling for four months without a head coach after their previous coach resigned because of illness.
Calder comes to Monbulk with plenty of experience having coached many up and coming swimmers to state and national titles.
He started coaching at the age of 17 and over the years has worked with elite athletes from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
Calder also had his own swimming school in Wellington where he coached many swimmers to state titles.
He heard about Monbulk Aquatic Club’s coaching dilemma and agreed to take on the job, which he started last week.
Calder said his job as head coach is to supervise all the training, which includes circuit, and weight training, and to assess the swimmers’ stroke techniques.
Monbulk Aquatic Club has 50 members, ranging from beginners right through to swimmers, competing in the state and national levels.
Calder said the club has six sessions a week where members can come along and work on their stroke technique, fitness training or practice their tumble turns.
He said it is important for people to remember swimming is not just all about the training but is fun too.
The club has also just recently added a catch line to its name calling themselves the Monbulk Aquatic Club – Monbulk Marlins.
Now that the club has a new coach, seven of its swimmers will be training hard for the upcoming state championship.
Anyone who wants to join the club can come along on Tuesday nights from 6pm or can call Gaby on 0407 071 013.
