Grand idea for caring

THESE days an increasing number of grandparents are minding their grandchildren while parents are working or studying or for other reasons.
Many children can therefore miss out on socialising with their peers.
“Here at Japara we are fortunate to have a group of grandparents with their grandchildren participating in activities and enjoying social contact for both grandparent and child,” said staff at this friendly neighbourhood house in Montrose.
“This is a great time for grandparents to meet other grandparents in similar circumstances.
“Some of the activities include painting, pasting or playdough, where everything is provided, and outdoor play in a secure setting in a licensed childcare centre.
“The grandparents cherish this time to be with their grandchildren,” they said.
The group meets each Tuesday morning from 10am to noon at Japara Neighbourhood House and staff would love to hear from any grandparents interested in joining in the activities.
In support of grandparents, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Japara House are offering two free sessions on Sharing the Care of Your Grandchild, and Grandparenting when young grandchildren have developmental difficulties and disabilities.
Contact Japara Neighbourhood House, 13 Leith Road, Montrose, on 9728 3587 for further information.
