Stars on the rise

By Tania Martin
TWO of Emerald Secondary College’s shining stars are on the right track to pursue careers in hospitality and multi-media design.
Becki Steer of Macclesfield and Jack Allisey of Emerald were last week awarded Federal Government vocational awards and a cheque for $2000 each.
The Australian Vocational awards recognise year 12 students who demonstrate both skill and commitment when undertaking school-based traineeships.
For Becki the cash prize will give her the chance to pursue her dream of a career in hospitality when she finishes secondary school.
She has completed her certificate II in hospitality but hopes to continue her education in the field.
For the past two years Becki has been undertaking a certificate course in hospitality, working at Charlotte’s on Main café in Gembrook while going to TAFE once a week.
Becki has also been busy studying for her Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).
She hopes to study hospitality management next year which will take her one step closer of her dream to one day owning and running her own café.
Becki said the vocational training program was a great way to fast track her career in hospitality.
“I got started on my career sooner than I would if I waited until I finished year 12,” she said.
Becki said winning the vocational award was a great reward for all her hard work over the past two years.
Meanwhile, Jack said he was shocked when he was announced a winner of the vocational prize.
He has been studying multi-media for the last two years and said he wants to continue his studies at Monash University next year.
Jack said he hopes to work in advertising, graphic design and animation one day.
“I like to see things come alive and develop,” he said.
Jack also said the vocational training course was a great stepping-stone for his career.
Both students said they would spend the prize money on furthering their education.
