A NEW initiative means local councils can now apply for funding to improve the safety, quality and amenity of taxi ranks in their area.
Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the Victorian Coalition Government’s Taxi Safety Program was an opportunity for councils to upgrade current infrastructure of local taxi ranks.
“Last year, the City of Casey benefited from up to $66,000 in funding from the Taxi Rank Safety Program,” he said.
Through the program, councils are able to upgrade taxi ranks making waiting for a taxi safer and more comfortable for passengers.
“Funding can cover a range of projects from lighting, seating, shelters and CCTV systems, through to road and footpath upgrades,” Mr Battin said.
“I invite local councils to consider any improvements to existing taxi ranks or the establishment of any new sites that could benefit the Casey area.”
Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder said the Taxi Rank Safety Program has already benefited many local communities across Victoria and programs like this build stronger and safer local communities.
The Taxi Rank Safety Program is administered by the Taxi Services Commission and community groups, businesses and taxi companies with an interest in the program should contact their local council.
