Get into Art! Have a fun day out

By Casey Neill
BURRINJA will hold a range of free activities as part of the second annual Get into Art! day on Sunday 28 October.
Almost 40 galleries across Victoria will take part in the Public Galleries Association of Victoria (PGAV) event.
The day gives Victorians the opportunity to access collections, exhibitions and programs around the state.
PGAV program manager Helen Kaptein said regular gallery visitors would be able to further connect with the art on display.
“If you haven’t visited your local gallery before, Get into Art! is the perfect introduction,” she said.
The artists behind Burrinja’s Turtles All the Way Down exhibition will answer visitors’ questions in the gallery from 1pm.
Artists Bill Kemp and Helen Varner will be available from 11.30am to talk about their multimedia display in the Jarmbi Gallery.
Guests can learn about the culture behind key works in the Shire of Yarra Ranges Burrinja Indigenous Collection through tours of the collection from 12.30pm.
Yarra Yarra elder and award-winning weaving artist Aunty Dot Peters will give basket-weaving demonstrations from 11am to 3pm.
Visitors can try barbecued kangaroo, emu and crocodile prepared by the Healesville Indigenous Arts Enterprise.
Between 11am and 1pm, youths aged 10 to 15 can create a map of where they live using Aboriginal symbols and designs.
Kids young and old can spend all day making figures of the Australian Aboriginal bush from recycled materials.
Soul band Alchemy will perform on the café stage all afternoon.
All activities are free and run between 11am and 4pm.
