THERE wasn’t a horse in sight at Marybrooke Receptions last Thursday but there was no shortage of fine fillies on display as Spring Carnival festivities gripped the Dandenongs for the Oaks’ Day Fashions on the Field fundraiser.
The event, organised by local charity group Heart of the Hills, had the duel purpose of raising funds for The Cancer Council Victoria while unveiling the new spring-summer range from Belgrave Heights designer and patent-maker Maddy Petrulis.
One-hundred ladies from across the hills donned their most glamorous race-wear and descended upon the regal Sherbrooke venue for an afternoon of fun, food and fashion.
After enjoying champagne on the sun-drenched lawn, the ladies moved inside for a three-course meal and a fashion parade showcasing Ms Petrulis’ newest threads.
The fledgling designer’s range is only her second line since revisiting her passion for fashion last year.
Ms Petrulis, who teaches VCE Design and Technology at Belgrave’s Mater Christi College, said she was prompted to start her own label after noticing a gap in the market for women over the age of 35.
“I try to combine comfort and fashion,” she said.
“I just look at what suits women of our age and what sort of clothes my friends want to wear.”
Ms Petrulis said Thursday’s event was an ideal opportunity to promote her new line while supporting a noble cause.
Ultimately, the Heart of the Hills group – founded by five local ladies 14 years ago in memory of a close friend who lost her battle with cancer – hailed the event as a resounding success, raising $2455 to be donated to The Cancer Council Victoria.
The Heart of the Hills group’s next fundraiser will be held at Clover Cottage in Berwick on Sunday 4 March with bookings available by calling Marg on 9754 5454.
Inquiries about Ms Petrulis’ range can be made by email to petrulis@bigpond.net.au.
