MOUNT EVELYN local Jane Vandenbroek is embarking on a two-day, 60-kilometre walk to End Women’s Cancers.
In conjunction with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Ms Vandenbroek, who is nearly 60 herself, will be taking part in the weekend event over the 1 and 2 March to raise money in support of the foundation.
“Cancer is so prevalent these days and most families are touched whether it is by a family member or close friend,” she said.
“I’ve been in the Mother’s Day Classic walk before and it was a great community event and a great feeling to know you were raising money for a very good cause – The Peter MacCallum Cencer Foundation.
“My sister had a scare that really threw me, but thankfully it all went OK.”
The weekend walk is to remember those lives that have been lost to breast or gynaecological cancer and to celebrate the lives that are currently being saved.
“Peter Mac does a wonderful job, and any money I can bring their way is great,” Ms Vandenbroek said.
“To participate, I had to raise $2000, but I’m really just looking to raise as much as I can.”
The proceeds raised from the walk provide vital funding to research and clinical care at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to enable life-saving cancer research.
Ms Vandenbroek said in preparation for the walk in March she had been practising by doing 30 kilometre walks along the Warburton Trail between Mordialloc and Millgrove.
“I really enjoy it and I feel better after I do it, so it’s good for me and good for the foundation,” she said.
“If anyone wants to make a tax deductible donation to either my walk or to the whole cause that would be great.”
