Dearth of educational training

By MELISSA MEEHAN

THE LACK of local educational facilities could mean Yarra Ranges residents don’t pursue opportunities they may have otherwise undertaken.
Yarra Junction resident and mum Tinelle Fiek studied a Certificate IV in Business Administration at Morrisons.
She then volunteered in the main office for six months to get the invaluable experience needed to help her gain employment in her chosen field.
But the news of its closure means Ms Fiek might not be able to further her studies in the future.
“I live in Yarra Junction, so to travel further to the suburbs to gain access to a learning facility would involve too much time, something I lack with a young family,” Ms Fiek said.
“Also the fact that Morrisons offered childcare, meant that anyone, especially young mums could learn while their children were looked after at the same facility.”
Ms Fiek said that Yarra Ranges residents from all over ranged in age and experience and was worried others were in the same boat as she.
“I may have used Morrisons in the future, but now I’m not sure,” she said.
“Because of my time at Morrisons, I urged my then unemployed brother to take a short course with them. I know he gained valuable experience and a worthy qualification from them he could use for the future.
“I now worry about the future of any opportunity to further my vocational skills.”
