IT’S official, the junior chefs at Silvan Primary School have created, “The Most Creative and Inspiring Dish” in the Green Schools Forum of the Yarra Ranges.
The winning students were presented with their trophy by local MP James Merlino at a special Assembly this week.
The team of Ella, Zane, Rebekah and Brayden beat students from Emerald and The Patch Primary Schools with their chocolate chip pancake dish, which featured local berries and herbs grown in the school garden.
The kitchen garden cook-off requires competitors to produce one savoury and one sweet dish, with ingredients which have been grown and harvested by students.
It was held at Silvan Primary School and will become an annual event to showcase the talents of budding local chefs.
The Silvan team included students from Grade 2 to grade 6.
Principal Damian Tirchett says the home economics classes, held each week for all grade levels, provide more than just cooking experience for his students.
“They teach valuable co-operation and teamwork skills… as well as knowledge about nutrition and health, which hopefully will last a lifetime,” Mr Tirchett said.
Mr Merlino also presented leadership badges to Silvan’s 2014 school captains, house captains and junior school councillors.
“We are looking forward to another great year, with some exciting opportunities for our new school leaders,” Mr Tirchett said.
