FITNESS fanatics are being warned to leave their valuables at home when using the 1000 Steps.
Senior Constable Jamie Cummings from the Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit said that visitors to the steps needed to be more vigilant, citing a number of thefts from the area.
Sen Const Cummings said that police had charged one person with a number of thefts but visitors also needed to be aware of their settings.
“We’re having reports of handbags left in the front seat, others are purses and phones,” he said.
“The best thing is to leave them at home.”
He said even those who tried to do the right thing were being targeted.
“We had one report where the victim had tried to do the right thing and put her bag in the boot,” he said.
“But the car was broken into directly from the boot – so we can only assume someone must have been watching.
“If you are going to put valuables in the boot, do it before you arrive.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Belgrave police on 9754 6677.
