Upwey-Tecoma clinches treble

CONTINUING the pennant competition following the Christmas break last Saturday, all three Upwey- Tecoma sides celebrated the New Year by recording substantial wins.
Playing at home against Cranbourne R.S.L. the Division Three side showed great tenacity to finish the day with a well-earned win.
The Damien Jones skipped team of Andrew Walters, Gavin Bransgrove and Jeremy Burns took the rink of the week award with a resounding win by 22 shots over their opponents.
Skip Greg Blades was in good form after having won the Group 13 singles championship earlier in the week, which elevates him into the Metropolitan final 16 of the Victorian singles championship.
Ably supported by Stuart Allen, Tas Boyce and Geoff Bell, this rink was in control right throughout the match to finish with 8 shots up.
The Division Six side had a tight battle against Monbulk. Playing on the faster greens at Monbulk, the Colin Benson skipped foursome were the only rink in front at the half time break.
Frank van Vloten was down by 16 shots at this point but his team rallied to claw their way back to finish with just a four shots deficit.
With the game hanging in the balance the teams of Simon Gringhuis and Ken Walters were under pressure to avoid a side loss.
Gringhuis and his team came home with a two shots win. Being five shots down when he went to the mat for his final two bowls, Walters drew his first bowl to hold shot which gave the Upwey-Tecoma side a very narrow win by three shots.
The third side travelled to Chirnside Park where they finished the day with a very narrow win.
George Simons and Deiter Eick both finished with two shots up wins.
