KNOX Council is getting tough on greenhouse gas emissions.
The council has launched its greenleaf project, which works with businesses, schools and residents to reduce their impact on the environment.
A series of workshops and tours for local residents start in March with My Impact on the Planet.
Knox mayor Jim Penna said participants would receive a sustainability kit including a range of free, simple and easy to use products.
“The initiatives will help individuals, families and businesses save money and reduce their impact on the environment,” Cr Penna said.
The mayor said the workshops would arm residents with the information, skills and confidence to create a sustainable home and lifestyle.
Also part of greenleaf is Vic 1000, a program designed to help local businesses to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent within two years.
Cr Penna said the initiative would focus specifically on helping businesses introduce simple, practical and affordable sustainability solutions.
He said Vic 1000 would give local businesses a better understanding of their operations.
“That gives them the power to introduce processes that reduce their environmental footprint and cut running costs,” he said.
Cr Penna said businesses involved in the program would also learn useful principles of sustainable business management.
He said the program would cover the topics of sustainable business management, energy waste, water and sustainable marketing strategies.
“It will also include workshops, individual business audits and one-on-one contact,” Cr Penna said.
Residents and small to medium businesses interested in participating in greenleaf or the Vic 1000 program can contact Deanne Jones on 9298 8000 or visit www.knox.vic.gov.au.
