THE greens at the Upwey-Tecoma Bowls Club were a hive of activity last Wednesday as the winter competition got under way.
As neither rain nor cold weather was about to intrude on proceedings, some fine bowling was the order of the day.
The rink of the week award was taken out by the Barry Hobell- Max Frost combination after having won their first game by 10 shots up and following on with a second game win margin of three shots up.
Starting favourites to win their second game Hobell and Frost encountered strong opposition from the pair of Colin Benson and Peter Kornow, who won the first three ends forcing the favourites to tighten their game and produce some exceptional shots to claw their way back for their win.
Competing In the triples section, the team of Janine Groves, Murray Stewart and skip Paul Hutchinson drew their first game as did the team of Terry Button, George Simons and skip John Christianson.
In the play-off to decide the winning team another drawn game looked likely until Christanson put down his final bowl which moved the jack enough to give his team an exciting win by a mere one shot.
With Monday evening bowls open to all comers and a Thursday evening competition contemplated in the near future, busy times are ahead for the more dedicated bowlers from Upwey and surrounding clubs.
Good start to midweek season
