MONBULK’S Donna Grundy has been busy thinking of ways to help the Nepalese basically since news of the earthquake spread.
To help the country during its time of need, Ms Grundy has raised an incredible $2000 since the quake after conducting various fund-raisers, including sausage sizzles and a massive garage sale.
Ms Grundy developed an affinity for the country and its people after volunteering at a Nepal orphanage late last year.
She and her son volunteered at Menzies Haven for a 10-week period, where she said they were welcomed like family.
The recent funds raised will go towards the Menzies Haven’s appeal.
Ms Grundy said the orphanage was undergoing challenges that go well beyond just caring for 30 children.
“The children at this orphanage are safe and scared, but (orphanage operators) are very busy trying to help their local community to recover from this disaster,” she said.
“They have cleared roads, removed rubble, cleared collapsed homes and fed 240 people.”
Ms Grundy said she felt compelled to continue to help the Nepalese.
“I am travelling back to Nepal to work with the children at the start of June for up to eight weeks,” she said.
“We have much to do.
“My son and I were welcomed into this beautiful large family when we volunteered there.”
