PETER Chilcott, 62, last week pleaded guilty to failing to stop in a hit-and-run car accident involving a pedestrian in Mount Evelyn in September 2013.
Chilcott faces up to 25 years in jail for lying to police and 10 years jail for leaving athletics coach Thomas Kelly to die.
Mr Thomas was hit and killed while walking on Birmingham Road, Mount Evelyn.
Police allege Mr Chilcott failed to stop at the scene after hitting Mr Kelly, then told his de facto wife Lorraine Morris, who was travelling with him, to lie to police.
Mr Chilcott was heard on police bugs admitting he would have been over the legal blood alcohol limit when driving, and he lied to police as he was worried about losing his licence.
My Kelly’s body was not found until 7.30am the following morning.
The police did not charge Mr Chilcott with any driving offences at that time.
