Handbag grab on train

POLICE are appealing for a Good Samaritan to come forward with evidence after he interrupted an attempted robbery.
A 42-year-old Ferntree Gully woman was travelling on a Belgrave-bound train of 18 May between 6.20pm and 6.30pm.
The woman had her handbag taken from her by a drunken male passenger; she then used force in an attempt to get her bag back.
Another male passenger intervened and demanded the man return the bag to the woman.
The offender left the train shortly after.
Police are appealing for this Good Samaritan or any witnesses who were on the train carriage to come forward with evidence of the incident.
Senior Constable Tom Holmes said this kind of occurrence was rare for the Melbourne train network.
“Public transport is an incredibly safe way to travel. The number of incidents that happen on train is really low for a city this size. Unfortunately, the victim was very unlucky to have had this happen,” he said.
He also had some advice to members of pubic who travel by train.
“The public transport system is safe. We think some common sense should come into where you place your bag.”
He recommended to place bags under their feet or if they have it out hold it onto their lap.
“We will do everything we can to catch this guy and to make sure people are safe.”
