Damp conditions didn’t rain on parade

By DENNIS FULLER

IF the members could find out who turned on the sprinklers and left them running all day on Thursday at Emerald Golf Club, quite a ruckus would have taken place.
But, alas, all they could do was to suck it up and play.
It was a par event which had the local lads clapping wildly but, as results rolled in, some were slightly south of disconsolate.
It was captain Dean Shannon (17) who made a meal of the course and the opposition when he rolled in with +5 to a crouching ovation by the defeated.
A countback was applied in B Grade and it evolved that John Carvill (18) was the winner over Ben Balfour (20) when they both carded +1.
Of the great unwashed, it was left to Brian McCoy (34) and Steve Town (13) to top the scoring with -1.
Leigh Morison was nearest the pin on the 4th and 12th, Peter Glasscock on the 7th, John Fisher the 13th and Dean Shannon walked away with the pro pin filthy lucre on the 18th.
After a waterlogged struggle, it was left to a bedraggled Davina Aitken to take out the prize in the ladies par event.
A second-round match in the match play championship took place with Peter Glasscock overcoming Leigh Morison for a solid win.
Wednesday’s Obliterated and Flaccid Golf (OFG) was a stableford event which was a winner for Leigh Morison (19) when he came in with a whopping 44 points.
Next on the leaders’ board was Moss Fuller (24) on 43, Gerran Wright (28) on 41 followed by John Carvill (19) on 40 with the rest languishing south of the Plimsoll line.
Next Saturday, members face off in an attempt to win the September VGL monthly medal with many empty promises of championship golf.
