THE Dandenong Ranges Oxfam group is organising an event to raise funds for Oxfam’s work to improve living conditions for people around the world.
The ‘Rock the Hills for Oxfam’ will be held at St Thomas More Hall, Belgrave, this Saturday, 24 October, at 8pm.
The group has been around since the earliest days of Community Aid Abroad formed in the region about 40 years ago.
Since 2004, the group has raised nearly $60,000 from events they have run locally.
These include music concerts and dances, featuring local and star acts, supper dances with an 18-piece swing orchestra, exhibitions of local artists work, catering for local open gardens, stalls at survival day in Belgrave, and hosting dinners serving international fare.
Group member Erica Kurec said the event would continue a proud tradition.
“We thoroughly enjoy what we do and the group has become famous for its fabulous baking skills, rivalling the CWA, so we are much in demand,” she said.
“Several members of our group have travelled to interesting countries such as Cuba and Brunei, which they have shared by giving detailed presentations at our meetings.
“Through our fund-raising activities, we aim to increase awareness in the community of Oxfam’s campaigns around the world at the same time creating opportunities for a shared enjoyable experience.
“Fortunately, Hills residents are very responsive, supporting these events with enthusiasm and generosity.”
The event will include four fantastic rock bands and supper (BYO drinks and nibbles).
Tickets cost $25, families $50.
