THIS Queen’s Birthday weekend, Alexandra comes alive with the annual Truck, Rod and Ute show … no, scratch that, it comes alive with a Speedway Show with almost 100 race drivers trying to complete 100 laps before everybody else can, all for the trophy at the end and bragging rights forever.
The nominations are in for the DIY Broadmeadows 100 Lap Derby from experienced and inexperienced racers from all over Victoria, plus one legend of the sport from NSW!
Alexandra has its own legend from the township itself with four-time event winner Luke Fallon from the Fallon’s Bus Service family aiming to become only the second driver to win it at least five times behind Neville Eltze, a nine-time winner!
Among the field is Matt Nelson, a Woori Yallock racer very capable of scoring the big win, as are at least 25 others including last season’s champion Tony Moule from Pakenham.
Sports Sedan Victorian champion Damien Miller, Colin and Corey Lincoln from Beveridge, David Erickson athlete time winner, Kilmore’s Daniel Scott and lady racer Kellie Atkins are just a handful of these potential winners.
Racing takes place through a dirt dogleg circuit track due to a right-hand turn that is built in the middle of the normally oval track.
Ross Nicastri from Goulburn NSW has entered to check out what all the excitement is about, having ventured to the speedway for traditional racing during the season.
The Standard Saloons are supported by local Alexandra business the ‘Shamrock Hotel’ as they compete for the Shamrock Cup separate to the 100 Lap Derby.
Mark Miles last year’s winner, Matt Nelson again, newly crowned Victorian champion Michael Ardley, Victoria number two driver Cameron Dike, local club member Nick Chrystie and Aaron Marshall are some of the state’s best in this field.
Completing the packed program is the National Junior Sedan division governed by Speedway Sedans Australia and local youngsters including Jackson Lunt, Ricky Cornwall, Caleb Lincoln, Tim Gorski and Courtney Meakins will be challenged by Australian champion Todd Atkins and Jack Brough from Portland in the Victorian Short Circuit Championship.
Racing starts at 2pm on both days and gate prices for spectators on both days are adults $20; aged and invalid pensioners $15, kids 12 to 16 $10, under 12 are free while two adults and two kids in the 12 to 16 aged bracket can get in for $50 with under 12 free.
Those attending both days can pay for the complete weekend upfront.
